Land Commitment

The project Global Dialogues was developed in an old building close to the mountain where the settlers' foundational cross stands. The building used to be a hospital run by Hospitaller Sisters of St. Joseph. Teesri Duniya Theatre creates and operates in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal) on the unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka people who are the rightful custodians of the lands, waters and resources.

Teesri Duniya Theatre is committed to engaging our community in dialogue at the intersection of socio-political issues and art. It would be hypocritical to discuss imperial violence in any form without first talking about the colonial violence perpetrated by the settler-state, Canada, here on Turtle Island. Moreover, the violence perpetrated by European "conquers" and "founders" throughout the lands of Abya Yala, which in the Kuna language means "land in its full maturity" or "land of vital blood".

We are deeply saddened by the history and ongoing legacy of colonialism and remain committed to fighting for Indigenous rights and sovereignty as key guiding principles to decolonization and reconciliation.

We intend this land acknowledgement to openly explore our responsibility to redress the generations of colonial violence that is the legacy of settlers on this land and elsewhere. We encourage everyone to further educate themselves on the historical and current colonial forces that have and continue to shape present-day life across Turtle Island and Abya Yala and to take action to support Indigenous, anti-colonial struggles to return unceded lands. These actions include stopping the development of pipelines, making efforts to end the war against Indigenous women, and ensuring no more Indigenous children are ever stolen or murdered again by acting upon the 94 calls to action put forth by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

As such, we would like to invite everyone to take a moment to acknowledge and/or reflect on the rightful custodians of the land that they are currently located in. We encourage you to look up information about your area if you are unsure. Let us begin by learning and acknowledging our relationship with colonial violence, together.
